Microsoft pulls out Office from its online store

Microsoft has pulled almost every version of Office from its own online store to comply with a court order requiring it to remove custom XML technology from its popular Word software starting today. All other Windows editions, as well as Office 2008 for Mac, were accompanied by the message: “This product is currently unavailable while we update versions on our site. We expect it to be available soon.”
Microsoft confirmed that the disappearance of Office was related to the injunction that came out of a patent infringement case the company lost in 2009.
“We’ve taken steps to comply with the court’s ruling and we’re introducing the revised software into the U.S. market,” said Michael Croan, a senior marketing manager, in an e-mail. He also downplayed the move. “This process will be imperceptible to the vast majority of customers, who will find both trial and purchase options readily available,” he added.
In an e-mail earlier today, Croan said only that Office would be “temporarily” unavailable, and that the suite would return “soon after Jan. 11,” when asked when Office sales would resume. In the meantime, Microsoft also told potential customers that they can download the free beta of Office 2010, the next-generation suite slated for a June release.
Previously, Microsoft had said the revised software would be ready by the Jan. 11 deadline. “We expect to have copies of Microsoft Word 2007 and Office 2007, with this feature removed, available for U.S. sale and distribution by the injunction date,” said Microsoft spokesman Kevin Kutz on Dec. 23.Lets hope everything gets sorted out fast.

While official confirmation from Apple and Qualcomm is still awaiting but Northeast Securities analyst Ashok Kumar serves as the source. He claims to have confirmed the partnership with iPhone manufacturers and suppliers.

How this interest of Qualcomm to be introduced to be iPhone came was when Qualcomm CEO Paul Jacobs confirmed that there is ongoing interest to become a chip supplier for Apple’s iPhone in a statement to Bloomberg.

Bloomberg writes:

Qualcomm seeks to join suppliers including Toshiba Corp. and Infineon Technologies AG to win chip orders for the iPhone, one of the two top-selling smart phones in the U.S. in the second-quarter, according to researcher NPD Group Inc. The San Diego-based company already sells semiconductors for handsets that use Microsoft Corp.’s Windows Mobile technology, and Google Inc.’s Android software, Jacobs said.

The iPhone and Research in Motion Ltd.’s BlackBerry Curve were the best-selling smart phones in the U.S. in the second- quarter, NPD Group said in August.

You might know that Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chip is powering the super speedy Nexus One. But the Qualcomm iPhone chip in question is different — reportedly a 3G wireless technology chip for EV-DO — this is still a massive get for the San Diego-based chip supplier, hoping this rumors turns to be true

More details on the tablet was provided by Google China’s ex-President, Kai-fu Lee(thanks to Neowin). He made a blog post regarding Apple’s upcoming tablet, claiming inside information on the upcoming mystery device. What he says is what we know till now but that would be nice to hear from a reputable source. This is what he quotes

Apple in January plans to launch an Apple Tablet, priced at $1000 U.S. dollars below. According to informed friend said that this Tablet looks like a large iPhone, there are 10.1-inch multi-touch screen, and amazing user interface, 3D graphics, virtual keyboard, video conferencing, e-books, Internet this and other functions. Steve Jobs will launch the product in January. The most striking: Apple expected the first year of output at close to 10 million!

Engadget explains why Lee’s post has high credibility. “What really got our attention is Lee’s link with Foxconn — the Apple OEM is one of the main contributors to Lee’s post-Google investment venture, Innovation Works, so there’s a good chance that Lee’s spoken to someone overlooking the manufacturing of a certain Apple device.”
So in all what we can expect is some points listed below
  • Steve Jobs will announce it in January (possibly on the 26th at their media event to be held at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco).
  • Apple expects to produce/sell 10 million of them in 2010.
  • Sub $1,000 price.
  • Looks like a large iPhone.
