Super Talent Working on USB 3.0 Flash Drive for less than $70

I had posted about Super Talent introducing the world’s first USB 3.0 flash drives a couple of months ago, and started shipping in small quantities just in time for the holiday shopping season. SuperSpeed USB 3.0 has a theoretical throughput of 4.8 Gbps, which translates to a raw transfer speed of 480 MB/s thanks to the 8b/10b encoding used. Actual performance is expected to peak around 400MB/s with protocol overhead, similar to how USB 2.0 peaks at around 40MB/s.The RAIDDrive that is shipping comes fairly close to this maximum, providing 320MB/s read using a UAS protocol driver. However, the cost for this premium drive has brought numerous requests for a more affordable solution that balances speed with affordability.

Super Talent is therefore working on a new SuperSpeed USB 3.0 flash drive and it’s tested too. The Express drive will achieve read speeds of 125MB/s and write speeds of 50MB/s. Downloading a 600MB movie will take only 12 seconds with this new drive. It will come in two models; a 16GB model will sell for under $70, while the 32GB model will sell for under $150.The size and cost is slashed dramatically by cutting out the RAID circuitry and reducing the amount of NAND flash memory needed. The Express drive has dimensions of 62 x 37 x7.5 mm.

“This product underscores Super Talent’s continued leadership in the USB 3.0 storage market.”, said Super Talent COO, C.H. Lee. “We’ve listened to our customers and responded with a USB 3.0 product that not only meets the market needs but hits the balance point between price and performance.”

The company will show off the first prototypes at CeBIT next month, with retail availability expected by the end of March.SuperSpeed USB 3.0 is now a standard feature on many premium motherboards. ASUS sells a adapter card featuring two 6Gbps SATA ports and two USB 3.0 ports for under $30.So that’s a awesome price just 70 bucks for 16 gigs with such a awesome transfer rate so get a PCI USB 3.0 card and your ready to go.

First USB 3.0 Pen drives announced in America

An american company by the name Super Talent Technology which is a manufacture of Flash storage solutions and ram modules have just announced the new SuperSpeed USB 3.0 RAIDDrive, which supports transfer speeds up to ten times faster than USB 2.0 drives. The new drive, in 32GB, 64GB and 128GB capacities, is fully backward compatible with USB 2.0 ports, but operates at slower speeds.

Let me give you a insight on how USB 3.0 works. This would give 10x time faster with speeds upto 5 gbps from 480 mbps of USB 2.0.In order to get USB 3.0, you would need to have a new motherboard that supports it or Alternatively, a new cable with a new host adapter.Motherboards with next-gen chipsets should feature the SATA 3 ports and the USB 3.0 ports on them. Many manufacturers did showcase some of the samples during the recently concluded CES2010. These may hit the markets by the end of the Q2 2010 and would become mainstream by the year-end or so.
The good part is that USB 3.0 is backward compatible with USB 2.0. What this means is that you can still use the device on a USB 2.0 port and achieve typical USB 2.0 performance.Though its 10x times faster, it still consumes one-third the power of USB 2.0.One more best thing is it can also supply enough power to run external 3.5″ HDD”s so we can have those huge 1-2 TB External HDD’s running without external power & at speeds which can match eSATA.
However, the actual speed increase may be totally dependent on the peripherals you connect e.g. external storage device should be capable of running at a speed higher than practical speed of USB 2.0 to see improvements. A Normal SATA drive will not give any improvements. Expect better performance from RAIDed hard drives or fast solid-state drives (SSDs) than from, say, a standalone single drive connected to the computer via USB 3.0.USB 3.0’s crucial advantage lies  for high-def video, music, and digital applications.
Whenever you buy USB 3.0 drives point must be taken into consideration that is has  certified SuperSpeed USB 3.0 logo. This presence of the certification logo will give you some peace of mind that the product you’re buying truly does live up to the USB 3.0 spec.As far as Notebooks go,  HP (EliteBook)and Fujitsu have announced limited USB 3.0 support and MSI is already marked for 2010 Q3. In this year, the only announced peripherals remain storage devices. However,  at CES 2011 we would see more specific consumer electronics devices such as digital cameras and camcorders and video cameras moving to USB 3.0.
So as far this Pen drive is in question, this  USB 3.0 RAIDDrive uses patented “multiple pairs of differential serial data lines technology” for optimal NAND flash performance. “This product underscores Super Talent’s continued leadership in USB drives.” said Super Talent COO, C.H. Lee. “We’ve developed the world’s first mobile USB 3.0 flash drive. It delivers phenomenal performance and it incorporates our own patented technology”.

Measures 95 x 37 x13 mm, Like most USB drives, it requires no separate cable. It plugs directly into any USB port. Although this drive will work in USB 2.0, it delivers transfer speeds up to 200MB/sec only in USB 3.0 ports. Using a separate UAS Protocol driver with a USB 3.0 port this SuperSpeed drive can reach up to 320MB/sec transfer speeds.
This product will be available in December from Super Talent resellers worldwide. It‘s just possible though, that by the time it would reach here there might be quite a few other companies that will have developed 3.0 drives as well.

Super Talent Announces First USB 3.0 Flash Drive, Transfer rate 320 MB/s

Super Talent Technology has been making a name for itself in the Solid State Drive market with speedy SSDs and its PCIe based RAIDDrive solutions. The company is now announcing that it plans to be the first in the world to ship USB 3.0 flash drives, with first availability at the beginning of December.
The SuperSpeed USB 3.0 interface supports transfer speeds up to ten times faster than regular USB 2.0. Although it has a theoretical throughput of 4.8 Gbps, USB 3.0 still uses 8b10 encoding. That overhead means that real world applications will top out at 400 MB/s, still much faster than the typical 35-40 MB/s with USB 2.0.
“This product underscores Super Talent’s continued leadership in USB drives.” said Super Talent’s COO, Mr. C.H. Lee. “We’ve developed the world’s first mobile USB 3.0 flash drive. It delivers phenomenal performance and it incorporates our own patented technology”.
Super Talent’s new RAIDDrive USB 3.0 series uses patented “multiple pairs of differential serial data lines technology” for optimal NAND flash performance. It will transfer data at 200 MB/s using a USB 3.0 port, but it can reach up to 320MB/s using a UAS Protocol driver.
The USB Attached SCSI (UAS) protocol runs over the USB 3.0 interface. The specifications were developed by the USB-IF to enhance the efficiency of USB storage devices. This is supposed to result in higher speeds and more consistent performance, as well as lower CPU utilization for both Hi-Speed USB 2.0 and SuperSpeed USB 3.0 devices.
The new drive uses USB 3.0 hardware from NEC, and will be available in 32GB, 64GB and 128GB capacities. It will be fully backward compatible with all USB ports, but operates at much slower speeds. It measures a 95 x 37 x13 mm, and comes with a limited lifetime warranty. Super Talent states that the new drive will have more than 10 years of data retention.
“SuperSpeed allows USB to meet the transfer demands of modern mass storage devices,” said Yoshiyuki Yamada, Senior Engineering Manager, Custom SOC Solutions Strategic Business Unit, at NEC Electronics America, Inc.
The new drive comes at a good time, as the first motherboards supporting USB 3.0 have just hit the market.Main thing what concerns is pricing and info about that was not yet available.Best thing is installing Windows 7 from high speed usb disks would be damn fast.I am gonna try that once that comes out.
