Crucial announces 6Gbps SSD's

World’s largest chip maker Intel have their feet grounded in the solid state drive segment thanks to impressive pricing and performance of the 80GB X25-M.But things might change after Feb 22nd.The company uses its own proprietary controller to attain the fastest random read and write performance in any SATA-based SSD.This also coincided when Micron’s RealSSD C300 came to the picture .It uses the same 34nm NAND flash memory as Intel from their joint venture IM Flash Technologies.Even Seagate has joined the league with Pulsar.

The C300 uses a new controller from Marvell with custom firmware developed in-house by Micron. The new disk is pitched as the fastest 2.5-inch SSD ever in random and sequential performance. With read speeds as high as 350MB/s the drives will require a 6Gbps SATA interface to unleash their full potential.

Crucial Technology, Micron’s retail subsidiary, will launch the consumer version of this drive on the 22nd of February, with the 128GB version priced at $399 and the 256GB version at $799. That’s an impressive $3.125 per GB on the 128GB drive. Compare that to Intel’s 80GB X25-M with a cost-per-GB of $3.625 and things really begin to look bleak for Intel.

The new drives also feature 256MB of DRAM cache and come with a five-year warranty. They will be available on Crucial’s website, as well as at retail and e-tail partners.Hopefully they’ll launch the same drive in a 64GBflavor as well, which would make it the best sub-$200 SSD.

World’s Overclocking Record Beaten: 8.20GHz Reached

Even though performance of contemporary personal computers does not heavily depend on clock-speeds of central processing units, it is still interesting to know the maximum clock-speed that can be achieved by modern microprocessors. Recently a new frequency record was set, when overclockers from XtremeLabs.org pushed Intel Celeron D 347 to nearly 8.20GHz.

Intel Celeron D 347 processor, which is based on the renowned NetBurst micro-architecture, is made using 65nm process technology and officially works at 3.06GHz. However, with the help of modified DFI LanParty UT P35 (Intel P35, revision A2), OCZ Technology memory and a lot of liquid nitrogen overclocker TiN from Xtremelabs.org reached 8199.5MHz clock-speed on the central processing unit.

To date, 8199.5MHz is the highest clock-speed ever reached by overclockers that has been validated by CPU-Z database.

Unfortunately, the overclockers did not run a set of benchmarks to find out actual performance of the extremely overclocked Celeron D 347. As a result, it is not known whether the chip at 8.20GHz can actually outperform modern Intel Core i7 microprocessors at around 3.00GHz.Read more at Xtremelabs

Office 2010 system requirements

Alex Dubec from the Office Trustworthy Computing Performance team, posted an update on the Office 2010 system requirements. One of the major problems faced by the Office 2010 team was to keep application requirements as minimal as possible, so users don’t need to upgrade hardware.Users who can run Office 2007 will have no problem running Office 2010 on their system but not sure on Office 2003 would do or not.

The minimum requirements for Office 2007 & 2010 is a 500Mhz processor with 256MB of RAM, compared to Office 2003, with 233Mhz and 128MB of RAM. CPU and GPU usage hasn’t changed since Office 2007, but Office 2010 does require more disk space than any previous version. The minimum disk space requirement has increase by 0.5GB while other Office 2010 suites have increase by 1.0GB or 1.5GB.

office charts 250x102 Office 2010 system requirements

The reasons for the increase is the added features, the new ribbon interface in all of the applications, the different flavours of Office 2010 and conservatism ” which means Microsoft will round up to the nearest 0.5GB or 1GB. If an application measured 1.63GB, the minimum requirements would be rounded up to 2GB or 1.99GB would be rounded up to 2.5GB.

Microsoft Office 2010 will still run on a DirectX9.0c graphics processor with 64MB of RAM.Although Microsoft recommends a higher system requirement to speed up performance in programs like Excel and PowerPoint, to help render graphs and charts.

Clean your registry with WinASO Registry Optimizer

Registry the heart of Windows, is one thing that needs to be taken care of seriously from spywares and adwares as these are the root causes of your pc behaving unstable. How do you protect your pc from viruses and spywares ? By using anti virus sofwares and anti-malware protection, but that alone isn’t enough for your pc to run smooth and stable. The registry keeps growing and some junk zero bytes data get stored reducing performance due to the changes of software, hardware and system settings in registry.

I normally use a combination of registry cleaners and software’s like Ccleaner , Tune up etc.Today i found one good software which has most of the features and cleans your registry too along lot of additional tweaks. The software i am talking about is WinASO Registry optimizer.I downloaded the trial version and tried out the various features and this was very impressive.I will just give what does this software provide and how better it is considering,  how this would increase your system performance.

When I installed WinASO Registry Optimizer I was presented by the screen as shown below. It consisted of 3 sections namely Clean center, Optimize center and Advanced tools. The default selection was Registry cleaner which gave a option to where the areas need to be examined.

HP starts shipping USB 3.0 enabled laptops

In my previous post i had mentioned about Super talent releasing the first USB enabled flash drive in America, seeing this HP has also joined the USB 3.0 arena by shipping the new Envy 15 laptops which come with a USB 3.0 ports which would give 10x time faster with speeds upto 5 gbps from 480 mbps of USB 2.0.

The good part is that USB 3.0 is backward compatible with USB 2.0. What this means is that you can still use the device on a USB 2.0 port and achieve typical USB 2.0 performance.Though its 10x times faster, it still consumes one-third the power of USB 2.0.One more best thing is it can also supply enough power to run external 3.5″ HDD”s so we can have those huge 1-2 TB External HDD’s running without external power & atspeeds which can match eSATA.

Expect better performance from RAIDed hard drives or fast solid-state drives (SSDs) than from, say, a standalone single drive connected to the computer via USB 3.0.USB 3.0’s crucial advantage lies  for high-def video, music, and digital applications. So how many buying the USB 3.0 enabled laptops.

First USB 3.0 Pen drives announced in America

An american company by the name Super Talent Technology which is a manufacture of Flash storage solutions and ram modules have just announced the new SuperSpeed USB 3.0 RAIDDrive, which supports transfer speeds up to ten times faster than USB 2.0 drives. The new drive, in 32GB, 64GB and 128GB capacities, is fully backward compatible with USB 2.0 ports, but operates at slower speeds.

Let me give you a insight on how USB 3.0 works. This would give 10x time faster with speeds upto 5 gbps from 480 mbps of USB 2.0.In order to get USB 3.0, you would need to have a new motherboard that supports it or Alternatively, a new cable with a new host adapter.Motherboards with next-gen chipsets should feature the SATA 3 ports and the USB 3.0 ports on them. Many manufacturers did showcase some of the samples during the recently concluded CES2010. These may hit the markets by the end of the Q2 2010 and would become mainstream by the year-end or so.
The good part is that USB 3.0 is backward compatible with USB 2.0. What this means is that you can still use the device on a USB 2.0 port and achieve typical USB 2.0 performance.Though its 10x times faster, it still consumes one-third the power of USB 2.0.One more best thing is it can also supply enough power to run external 3.5″ HDD”s so we can have those huge 1-2 TB External HDD’s running without external power & at speeds which can match eSATA.
However, the actual speed increase may be totally dependent on the peripherals you connect e.g. external storage device should be capable of running at a speed higher than practical speed of USB 2.0 to see improvements. A Normal SATA drive will not give any improvements. Expect better performance from RAIDed hard drives or fast solid-state drives (SSDs) than from, say, a standalone single drive connected to the computer via USB 3.0.USB 3.0’s crucial advantage lies  for high-def video, music, and digital applications.
Whenever you buy USB 3.0 drives point must be taken into consideration that is has  certified SuperSpeed USB 3.0 logo. This presence of the certification logo will give you some peace of mind that the product you’re buying truly does live up to the USB 3.0 spec.As far as Notebooks go,  HP (EliteBook)and Fujitsu have announced limited USB 3.0 support and MSI is already marked for 2010 Q3. In this year, the only announced peripherals remain storage devices. However,  at CES 2011 we would see more specific consumer electronics devices such as digital cameras and camcorders and video cameras moving to USB 3.0.
So as far this Pen drive is in question, this  USB 3.0 RAIDDrive uses patented “multiple pairs of differential serial data lines technology” for optimal NAND flash performance. “This product underscores Super Talent’s continued leadership in USB drives.” said Super Talent COO, C.H. Lee. “We’ve developed the world’s first mobile USB 3.0 flash drive. It delivers phenomenal performance and it incorporates our own patented technology”.
supertalent usb 3.0 250x156 First USB 3.0 Pen drives announced in America
Measures 95 x 37 x13 mm, Like most USB drives, it requires no separate cable. It plugs directly into any USB port. Although this drive will work in USB 2.0, it delivers transfer speeds up to 200MB/sec only in USB 3.0 ports. Using a separate UAS Protocol driver with a USB 3.0 port this SuperSpeed drive can reach up to 320MB/sec transfer speeds.
This product will be available in December from Super Talent resellers worldwide. It‘s just possible though, that by the time it would reach here there might be quite a few other companies that will have developed 3.0 drives as well.
