HTC Evo 4G Experiences SD Card Storage Bug + Fix

It’s been two days or so when HTC EVO 4G smartphone was available but some early users, especially those that have got their hands on this awesome smartphone  during developer conference two weeks ago have experienced some glitch or issues related to its 8GB SD card bundled with the phone package. The scenario what happened was when the users tried to save captured photos into its external storage in SD card which lead to “insufficient permissions” error displayed on its screen. And to certain extend, some users did realize that their Evo 4G cannot access the SD card storage at all.

Unfortunately, the issue has just been spotted few days before its official launch that will definitely need some quick resolution before mass shipment out to consumers. While trying to take photos from the camera and saving them directly to the microSD card, they received an error message saying “insufficient file permissions”. Some Google I/O participants also faced the same issue. There’s also a group of apparently proud HTC EVO 4G owners who are not able to access the SD card at all.

The root cause is still unknown but it seems that recycling the power sequence or switching the card out helped to eliminate the phenomenon. Some did point the finger to the ‘defective’ batch memory card manufactured by Sandisk but it is likelihood that the issue could be due to software glitch that can be easily be fixed with necessary software updates without any hardware tweak.

Both HTC and Sprint spokesperson acknowledged the issues and is currently testing some resolution that is expected to be available soon.If you are the one of them, you need not worry. Sprint has analyzed the issue and is already rolling out an OTA(over the air) update to fix it. If you didn’t get an ‘update available’ notification, you can manually update your HTC EVO 4G to resolve SD card problems.

A guided tour will start to help you with the rest of the update process.Note that it is a 13MB OTA update. But you might not need to worry since you will be able to make/receive calls during data transfer. If you are a potential EVO 4G owner, you need not worry. Just go ahead and buy the phone because you’ll be able to fix the issue at no effort at all. Just follow the above steps once you have the phone.

Acer going DirectX 11 way for notebooks -Aspire 8942

Acer is reportedly building a new range of gaming notebooks that will incorporate various high-end technologies including a DirectX 11-capable graphics chip. What else you need to game on this. The card would be one of the newly launched 5870 or 5850 ones, mostly the latter. It’s termed with model as Aspire 8942G-728G1280TWN.Aspire 8942 will feature a friggin super cool config an 18.4″ 1080p LED display, a 1.6GHz Core i7-720QM, 8GB of DDR3 RAM, an AMD Mobility Radeon HD5850 with 1GB of GDDR5 VRAM, dual 640GB HDDs, and a Blu-ray drive.
The Aspire 8942 will also house four USB 2.0 ports, 802.11a-n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ExpressCard, HDMI, a five-in-one card reader and more. An eight-cell battery will power the system, which weighs about 4.6kg (over 10lbs) — or about as much as two average 15″ notebooks, as stated by Fudzilla.http://www.fudzilla.com/content/view/16684/1/ .So that’s bulky i can say.
There are no details on a price or availability as Fudzilla reported, but it seems likely that the Aspire 8942 will start shipping in January or shortly after.

Nvidia Fermi Tesla – A look into it

After ATI released the fastest Graphics card ever aka ATI 5970, Nvidia lagged behind the war between the titans in the graphics card segment and there was no news on when the GTX 300 would be made out.Nvidia didn’t show anything on the typical consumer side, but rather for Supers (HPCs), they gave AMD a big hit.But at this year’s SC09 supercomputing trade show in Portland, Oregon, Nvidia unveils its plan for the next-gen Chip ‘Fermi’. Overall, the GPU co-processors aimed at personal supers and massive clusters were the stars of the show. This is something much more powerful than AMD’s Fusion.

fermi archi

The video card versions of the Fermi chips will be called the GeForce 300 M. Nvidia  is keeping the Tesla brand for its next generation GPU co-processors for workstations and servers. The Fermi chips will be sold under the Tesla 20 brand.RegHarware talked about the specs and hardware.

Andy Keane, GM at Tesla supercomputing (Nvidia)  said, the Tesla 20 cards will come in 2 flavors. Nvidia will sell co-processor systems that can plug right into HPC clusters and link to servers through PCI-Express 2.0 links – and at around 130 watts. Keane bristles at anyone who claims that a fully burdened heat budget for a server – not just a microprocessor, but its memory controller (if it is not integrated), its chipset, and its memory – will be any lower.

What you can expect With the Fermi family of GPUs is, addition of L1 and L2 caches to the co-processors along with putting ECC memory scrubbing on internal GDDR5 video memory on the card as well as accesses to external server memory. This ECC support, as it turns out, is as important as anything else in the chip if you want to sell GPUs to nuke labs.

The Fermi chip has 512 cores, which is more than twice the cores of the first Tesla GPUs. The Fermis bundle 32 cores together into a streaming multiprocessor that has 64 KB of shared L1 cache. All 512 cores have access to a shared 768 KB L2 cache, and they support the IEEE 754-2008 double precision floating point standard.

In theory, the Fermi chip can address up to 1 TB of memory, but the Tesla C2050 GPU co-processor has 3 GB of GDDR5 memory and double precision floating point performance of 520 gigaflops, costs $2,499. The Tesla C2070 GPU has 6 GB of GDDR5 memory and is rated at 630 gigaflops, costs $3,999. The bang for the buck is best with the smaller unit, which weighs in at $4.81 per gigaflops compared to the $6.35 per gigaflops of the faster GPU.

On the higher Front, a 1U appliance with four of the faster C2070 GPUs delivers 2.52 teraflops of double-precision floating point performance and costs $18,995, or $7.54 per gigaflops.

Two types of GPU would be made available.First one, they will now support Nvidia’s C++ compiler (not just C).Secondly, a set of new InfiniBand and Tesla drivers that InfiniBand chip maker Mellanox and Nvidia have got together to streamline the movement of data from the InfiniBand ports, to the CPU’s main memory, and then down through the PCI-Express bus to the GPU card. How this process works is as follows.

Data comes in over InfiniBand, works its way into main memory and is copied; before it is moved down to the GPU, it is copied again and that copy is what is moved. The driver changes allow for the data moved into memory to be moved down to the GPU in one fell swoop. What do we get from this  ? They have been able to boost a 30% increase in speed. The Tesla 20 GPU co-processors & the appliances based on them will be available in the 2nd quarter of 2010. The GeForce graphics cards based on the same GPU chips will be seen around first quarter.

ATI announces World’s fastest Graphics Card – ATI 5970

ATI announces Worlds fastest Graphics Card ATI 5970

AMD is on a high note these days with releasing wonderful range of budget graphic cards with performance like the 5750, 5770 and the high end ones like  5850 and 5870.Today AMD announced their new dual graphics card – ATI Radeon HD 5970.Besides being the fastest, it’s the one of the first(others being 5850 and 5870) to provide support for Microsoft DirectX 11 and Eyefinity multi-display at a max resolution of 7680×1600.

As we all know ATI are no longer naming these dual cards “X2’s” as it is difficult to remember their names.HD 5970 is basically two RV870’s in one solution and the core clocks will be between 725-750mhz and has 3200 stream processors (2×1600) along with the 2GB GDDR5 memory via a dual 256 bit bus implementation. These are basically two  5800 series  i.e HD 5850s running together the HD 5970 with 2x 80 texture units which is double what is implemented on a HD 5870.

The rest of specification includes 160 texture units, 116 Gtexel/second texture fill rate, compute performance of 4.64 Tflops as well as 64 ROPs. Pixel fillrate is 46.4Gpixels/s, Z / stencil is at 185.6 Gsamples/s and the memory data rate is 4.0 Gbps. It’s outrageously fast. It delivers approximately 5 TeraFLOPS of computer power (and up to 10TeraFlops when combined with ATI CrossFire).Just imagine how fast it is.

Patch to enable PhysX when ATi card is present

There has been issues with Nvidia, disabling Physx when ATI cards are present. As you might know that Windows 7 allows two display drivers to be used at once – like in Windows XP.Therefore, it is possible to use an Nvidia card for PhysX and ATI card for graphics rendering. Sadly, since the release of 186 graphics drivers, Nvidia has decided to block this feature anytime a Non-Nvidia GPU is present in the system.

In addition, for some incomprehensible reasons, the latest version of PhysX System Software also prevents PPU cards from working if a Non-Nvidia GPU is present. As expected, this move by Nvidia generated a lot of criticism from both consumers and even Nvidia’s competitors. Luckily, a forum member by the name of GenL has released an experimental beta patch which intercepts disable-PhysX-if-Radeon-is-present-code.

So far, according to user comments the patch delivers successful results. At this stage, the patch only works for PhysX GPU rendering and not PPU rendering. However, the developer claims that work is still in progress.Do try out the patch and post your comments on the success rate.
