Apple press conference to be led by Old spice man and not Steve jobs

In a surprise move, Apple has hired “Old Spice Man” Isaiah Mustafa to lead the company’s press conference to address the iPhone issue on Friday i.e today, people with knowledge of the situation have confirmed.Today on the Conversation, ABC’s John Berman goes one-on-one with the Old Spice man himself, actor and former NFL player Isaiah Mustafa, chatting from his shower.”I think the Old Spice campaign is really breaking new ground here,” said marketing expert Michael Fleischner. “Ads have always been a form of entertainment, but now when you add that viral effect it’s really starting to escalate.”

Insiders say Apple CEO Steve Jobs has been captivated by the Old Spice Man’s personalized videos, describing Mustafa as “beautiful” and having “wonderful, magical abs.” Hiring Mustafa for Friday’s event was evidently seen by those within Apple as a compromise between Jobs and the company’s board of directors.“We’ve been trying to get him to do something about this shoddy antenna problem since day one, but he just keeps pouting and refusing to admit anything’s wrong.” explains one source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The Old Spice Man will appear shirtless via a satellite video connection, insiders say, and will answer questions asked by reporters at the event. He won’t directly acknowledge any design flaw with the new iPhone but will discuss how “real men use the iPhone” and “don’t complain about how they have to hold it.”

Apple iPhone 4 Antenna problems confirmed Jobs responds

Customers who received the Apple iPhone 4 early have begun complaining that simply picking up the iPhone 4 and holding it can send the phone’s signal indicator plunging, by several bars. Gizmodo also assembled a number of reader responses that apparently confirmed the signal loss. The issue, according to industry executives, is that the iPhone 4 places its antenna on the outside of the case, where merely touching it can theoretically limit its ability to pick up a signal. “Antennas are very sensitive; that’s just a fact with all antennas,” said Michael Rogers, chief engineer at Wi-EX, a maker of cell-phone signal booster equipment, an industry which would stand to benefit from issues with the iPhone 4’s antenna.

A slight drop in signal, say from four bars to three, wouldn’t be enough to affect a cell-phone call or data coverage, Rogers said. But a sharp drop to a single bar of coverage could be enough to lose the signal altogether. Enough margin is built in with data coverage that users may not see a dramatic effect in an area with a strong signal. “But if you’re in a fringe area, anything like this means you’ll drop more calls,” Rogers said.

Even PCMag.com conducted experiment to check if it’s true for them, truly the iPhone 4 reception problem could indeed be replicated, with the so-called “death grip” – where the iPhone 4 was held with fingers touching the three antenna “lines” circling the device – causing the signal to drop.

They used Speedtest.net speed testing software to test with the phone sitting on a tabletop. If the phone was picked up the phone with a slightly sweaty hand and purposefully put one finger on each of the three “lines” around the edge of the device, with the corner tucked into the pad of the hand, the speed dropped dramatically and sometimes stalled out. Returning it to the tabletop caused things to speed up again. Adding one of Apple’s rubber “bumpers” to the phone negated the death grip, so it clearly has something to do with conductivity.

When the first iPhone came out, Apple placed the antenna in an obvious location, on the back of the device, Spencer Webb said, president of AntennaSys, an independent antenna consultant and designer for mobile and other products. If a user covered with a hand, the cell-phone signal dropped,  in a phone interview that he said was being conducted on the iPhone. “I’m talking to you now with a well-trained hand,” he said.

Webb said that he had recently designed a broadband GSM antenna, which he surrounded with an air gap to minimize interference from the GPS chip and other components, to increase performance. But the design of the iPhone 4 is so compact, and thin, that there wasn’t room to include any sort of an air gap, he said. The Apple iPhone 4 produces a maximum of 1.17 mW/g of SAR radiation at the ear, more than the iPhone 3GS and original iPhone, but less than the 3G, at 1.38 mW/g. Moving the antenna closer to the ear was “unfortunate,” Webb said. “And that’s the best I can say.”‘

Papool Chaudhari of Reyes Bartolomei Browne, a lawyer representing an inventor of a technology designed to minimize cell-phone radiation, went further. “I think Apple chose to sacrifice safety for better call reception,” Chaudhari said in a statement. “By placing the antenna outside the housing, Apple hopes to solve the dropped-calls problem, but at what cost?”

Webb said that he arrived at a choice between two conclusions: either the gaps in the band were not really involved with the antenna and the RF current, or that they were. “And if they are…that’s one’s of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen,” he said. “You can’t pick up the iPhone and not interfere with the antenna. It’s even harder to pick up the phone and not interfere with the antenna than the first-generation iPhone.”

This isn’t a deal breaker. In a reasonable world with reasonably good signal, you have decibels per milliwatt (dBm) to spare. But iPhone users have been frustrated with voice calling since the first iPhone came out. I personally don’t think circuit switched voice calls are Apple’s top design priority, and AT&T’s network has been overloaded by iPhone users practically since day one.

Steve Jobs likes to say he’s trying to make perfect products, and deep down in their emotional cores, Apple fans don’t understand why that doesn’t also include perfect RF reception and perfect network quality. Apple’s repeated “betrayals” of the enthusiast community by re-signing exclusivity deals with AT&T drive people to distraction. The iPhone 4 isn’t the perfect RF device. It has lots of strengths. Nothing, and no one, is actually perfect. And the death grip, really, is just a little reminder of the imperfections that keep our world interesting, challenging, and a world where there are many great mobile phones, not just one.

The phenomenon is similar to that of a person standing near an old-school television antenna. The water-filled human body affects the incoming signal, though in the television’s case the signal tends to be improved, Wired reports. On MacRumors, people have reported frequently dropped calls or poor cell reception on their new iPhones. But some reports suggest the latter problem may have more to do with how the signal is displayed on the phone rather than an actual reception flaw

Even Engadget contacted Apple and found out that if you cover the bottom-left corner of the phone and bridge the gap between the notch there with your naked flesh, you could see some signal degradation. Yes, you read that right: it’s not a software or production issue, simply a matter of the physical location of your hand in regards to the phone’s antenna. The company’s suggested fix? Move your hand position, or get a case which covers that part of the phone, thus breaking contact.

Here’s Apple’s official statement,

Gripping any phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your Phone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases

We know what you’re thinking, and we’re thinking it too: this sounds crazy. Essentially, Apple is saying that the problem is how you hold your phone, and that the solution is to change that habit, or buy one of their cases. Admittedly, this isn’t a problem that exists only for the iPhone 4 — we’ve seen reports of the same behavior on previous generations (the 3G and 3GS), and there is a running thread about this problem with the Nexus One. While it is definitely true that interference is an unavoidable problem, we can’t help feeling like this is really a bit of bad design. If the only answer is to move your hand, why didn’t Apple just move the antenna position?

Many have pointed out that utilizing one of Apple’s bumpers or a typical iPhone case fixes the issue. However, Apple CEO Steve Jobs has offered other advice to a few iPhone owners that  decided to email him about the problem saying,

Every phone has these areas of sensitivity, depending on the location of the antenna. Some phones even ship with labels warning customers to not cover certain areas with their hands

Check out the video of iPhone 3G having the same poor reception effect.

AT&T And Apple Register 600,000 iPhone 4 pre-Orders, Apple apologizes for issues

Recently i had posted about Apple and AT&T selling out of iPhone 4 pre-order units despite the sustained ordering issues, and now we know why: Apple managed to move 600,000 iPhones in just a single day. Yes, that’s a lot — Apple says it’s the largest number of pre-orders it’s ever taken in one day, and AT&T says it’s ten times as many orders as it took for the iPhone 3GS.Apple’s also apologizing to the large numbers of people who simply couldn’t get through yesterday, and AT&T’s suspended pre-orders entirely until the device is in stock.

We’re guessing AT&T might also be putting the stopper on things while it gets those pesky security issues under control, but there’s a chance the carrier is just trying to deal with the insane order volume coming from Apple’s servers — it served up 13 million eligibility checks yesterday, shattering the previous record by three times. All in all, it looks like Apple has a hot item on its hands here — almost too hot to handle.

Here’s Apple’s full statement:

Yesterday Apple and its carrier partners took pre-orders for more than 600,000 of Apple’s new iPhone 4. It was the largest number of pre-orders Apple has ever taken in a single day and was far higher than we anticipated, resulting in many order and approval system malfunctions.

Many customers were turned away or abandoned the process in frustration. We apologize to everyone who encountered difficulties, and hope that they will try again or visit an Apple or carrier store once the iPhone 4 is in stock.

Here is AT&T spokesperson Seth Bloom said in an email,

iPhone 4 pre-order sales yesterday were 10-times higher than the first day of pre-ordering for the iPhone 3G S last year. Consumers are clearly excited about iPhone 4, AT&T’s more affordable data plans and our early upgrade pricing.

Given this unprecedented demand and our current expectations for our iPhone 4 inventory levels when the device is available June 24, we’re suspending pre-ordering today in order to fulfill the orders we’ve already received.

The availability of additional inventory will determine if we can resume taking pre-orders.

In addition to unprecedented pre-order sales, yesterday there were more than 13 million visits to AT&T’s website where customers can check to see if they are eligible to upgrade to a new phone; that number is about 3-times higher than the previous record for eligibility upgrade checks in one day.

We are working hard to bring iPhone 4 to as many of our customers as soon as possible.

If you weren’t one of the lucky 600,000 who were able to get your pre-order in at some point yesterday, it looks like you’re going to be out of luck during opening week sales. What neither Apple not AT&T say are exactly how many phones were pre-ordered in the U.S. for AT&T. Apple said 600,000 and its “carrier partners.” Since the iPhone is going to be available in more than one country on day one, many of those sales were outside the U.S.I am kinda surprised is that number a bit exaggerated, since the system seemed to be broken most of the day.

Apple is good at manipulating the market. I seriously doubt a large number of iPhone 3G and 3Gs owners are willing to pay the hefty early termination contract penalty just to get the iPhone 4.These pre-orders are likely a group of people hired to call in and jack up the numbers as if 600,000 people are actually going to buy the iPhone 4. Especially even after they’ve already paid too much for the iPad! Looks like Apple did it again and Android will mirror these same tactics to manipulate the market just as well.

Apple iPhone 4 pre- orders already sold out

Yesterday was the day when the door to pre-order iPhone 4 was opened. You might have wanted to pre-order online from the comfort of your home at Apple’s site, because you’ll be guaranteed delivery on launch day without any hassles of dealing with lines, riots, or uninformed sales clerks but you might had a tough time as iPhone 4 pre-orderers overwhelmed the servers of both Apple site as well as AT&T.There was some unclear news about 3rd party retailers like Radioshack, Best buy or Walmart.BGR reported that AT&T’s launch day allocation of iPhone 4’s is sold out, and anyone who got in the door after 1:30PM Pacific Time would get their unit some time between June 25 and July 5.

AT&T also confirmed in the official statement,

Because of the incredible interest in iPhone 4, today was the busiest online sales day in AT&T history. As of Tuesday afternoon, customers who preorder iPhone 4 moving forward will receive their device on June 25 or later, depending on when the order is placed. We’ll email customers with confirmation once their order is placed, and again when it ships. In addition, we will have devices available on a first-come, first-serve basis in our stores beginning on June 24

Factory Unlocked iPhone was first made available for pre-order only in UK and France with a whooping expensive pricing. To our utter disappointment, 16GB iPhone 4 is up for £499 whereas the 32 GB model for a whooping £599!Apple’s official website for France is also offering the unlocked iPhone 4. 16 GB iPhone 4 is for 629 € and 32GB model is for 739 €! Pre-orders are limited to two per customer. The 8GB iPhone 3GS is out for those of you looking to keep it old school at $99 on a two-year AT&T contract.

From AT&T in the US to O2 over in the UK, it seems that just about everyone ambling to get their name on a future iPhone 4 was experiencing a great deal of frustration. AT&T’s servers seem to be completely hosed here in America, and since Apple’s own online order process has to ping those to check on your contract status, neither option was.. um, working. Those who decided to line up at a local store are facing similar issues; employees weren’t able to fully process pre-orders in store due to systems being overwhelmed, and no one seems to exactly know when things will be back to normal. And you thought the most enraging part of this was the inability to select a white model.

We hear that US pre-orderers are having more success with the AT&T link and the places you must check out is Apple (US), Apple (UK), Apple (FR).Apple is also suggesting you head into a store if things aren’t working out online.RadioShack will start accepting pre-orders in stores soon which will come off the price of the phone when you pick it up; they’re throwing in an accessory credit, too (basically the same setup as the EVO 4G launch).Even Best Buy locations have started doing the same, telling that they definitely won’t be taking pre-orders but may be by the end of the week.So keep trying until then hope you get lucky.
