Facebook Just Changed Everyone’s Email to @Facebook.com without a notice – Here is How to Fix It

I was just browsing through my facebook news feed and I saw Mary Jo Foley mentioning about Facebook changing email address to @facebook.com and I was shocked and I checked my about page.I was surprised to see that Facebook had actually changed my email address from gmail to @facebook.com url.If you remember Facebook had launched its own email service back in 2010 and lot of hoopla was created on how to get yourself a email address but people actually forgot about it.So if any of my friends wanted to get in touch with me they would just go into my profile and find my email address but not from now. If you go to your profile (or anyone else’s), you’ll see the @facebook.com email account listed, and none of your others.

Luckily there is a fix to revert back to use your email address and to avoid the facebook email address. What you need to do is

  • Go to your “About” link on your profile and scroll down to your email address. Click on “Edit” to change them.
  • Now you would see a circle next to your Facebook email address click on it and change its setting to “Hidden From Timeline”.
  • Then above the facebook email adress you will also see your email address with a circle click on it and change their settings to “Shown On Timeline”.
  • Click the Save button at the bottom of the Edit popup and your done.Back to how it was.(Don’t forget this step).
  • This is it but still Facebook never even bothered to let users know the change else your friends wont be able to contact you when they want to.

A Facebook spokesperson(Via maatthew Key’s blog) provided the following non-explanation to Reuters:

As we announced back in April, we’ve been updating addresses on Facebook to make them consistent across our site.

In addition to everyone receiving an address, we’re also rolling out a new setting that gives people the choice to decide which addresses they want to show on their timelines.

Ever since the launch of timeline, people have had the ability to control what posts they want to show or hide on their own timelines, and today we’re extending that to other information they post, starting with the Facebook address.

Till now we had the option of choosing what we want to show on our facebook page but now things are getting reversed.Share this info with your friends and get facebook back to how it was.
