Tim Cook is on stage! “Thank you very much for joining us.”
“It’s great to be back in California Theater. We’ve had some very fond memories here and we’re going to be creating a few more today.”
Tim starts with talking about iPhone 5
“We sold out the first weekend, selling more than 5 million units. This was fantastic. This is the most iPhones ever sold in the opening weekend, and the most phones ever sold in the opening weekend.”
Video showing how excited every one is
Lots of fans grinning and holding up their boxes. It’s a joyous time. Joyous commercialism.
Video is over, Tim is back up on stage. Big applause!
“Our teams work incredibly hard to deliver amazing products like iPhone 5, and seeing this type of customer response reminds us why we love to do it.”
He’s talking iPod now, the new touch and nano.
Over 3 million iPods sold! Unclear if that’s both or just of one… likely both
Tim is talking iOS 6 now. “Our teams work really, really hard to make sure that as many devices as possible are upgraded to the latest operating system.”
200 million devices already upgraded to iOS 6! – Phenomenal says Tim. Applause
Tim’s talking Documents in the Cloud and other Mountain Lion functionality — sharing, it’s a beautiful thing. There are now 125 million Documents in the Cloud already
Tim’s talking iMessage too. 300 billion iMessages have been sent since the platform launched!
We are currently sending them at 28,000 per second, maybe even more by now!”
160 million Game Center accounts now.
And, with the Shared Photo Stream function in iOS 6, there have been 70 million photos shared — probably a large chunk of them by reviewers who were testing out iOS 6.
Comes to App store – 700,000 iOS apps and 275,000 iPad-specific ones.
35 million apps have been downloaded!
$6.5 billion paid out. for developers
iBookstore now. 1.5 million books available, and 400 million downloads to date.
We’re getting a new version if iBooks soon with continuous scrolling. No more page turning!
It’s iCloud integrated, so your reading position syncs wirelessly to all devices.”The pages turn right to left, just like you’d expect.Available today.
Mac talk time. Tim says the Mac market has outgrown the PC market by 7 times, and has outgrown the PC market for six years straight. Thats because the Mac is consistently named #1 in terms of customer reliability.
Macs are the #1 notebook and #1 desktop. “This is absolutely incredible.” Huge round of applause!
“Now we’re really pleased with all of the momentum with the Mac, but we are not standing still. We’re going to continue innovating with the Mac, and we’ve got some really great stuff to show you this morning.”
Phil Schiller is up on stage. Big applause!
“We have a great lineup of notebook computers called MacBook, and just a few months ago we introduced the best MacBook we’ve ever created.”
“The new display is gorgeous. Absolutely gorgeous.”
Phil is pointing out that the 13-inch MacBook Pro is actually their best seller. “It truly is a great computer. So, in typical Apple Fashion we’re going to take our best product and introduce something so much better.”
So here it is – the new 13 inch Macbook Pro.
“It is incredibly thin, just .75-inches thick.” That’s 20% thinner than before
Weighs 3.5 pounds about a full pound lighter than before, and says it’s the lightest MacBook ever.
Will come with a Retina Display , MagSafe 2, dual Thunderbolts, SD card, HDMI output and dual USB 3.0 without the optical drive.
Display is 2,560 x 1,600 resolution. That’s a 4x boost over the previous 13-incher.
It’s the world’s second highest resolution computer — the 15-inch Retina being #1.
It offers nearly 2x the resolution of a 1080p display. 29% higher contrast ratio over the previous Pro and 75% reduced glare, 300 nits brightness. Some thing very cool
“There’s never been a small notebook that gives pro photographers this kind of technology.”
Phil says there are “plenty more” apps that support Retina now, which is of course good news for those with a great abundance of pixels.
Facetime HD camera with 720p recording, stereo mics and speakers, backlit keyboard and of course that patented glass multitouch trackpad.
We’re looking at the bottom without the case, the custom battery layout and dual fans. It looks reminiscent of the 15-inch Pro with Retina.
Up to 768GB of flash, 8GB of RAM, Core i5 or i7 Ivy Bridge chips, 802.11n WiFi and Bluetooth 4. HD 4000 graphics.
Damn HD 4000 Graphics no ATI OR Nvidia here ;(
7 hours of battery life – which is awesome
$1,699 for the base model, with a 2.5GHz i5, 8GB of RAM and 128GB of flash. – $500 less than the basic 15 incher model
Starts shipping today so start Pre ordering
It’s green, of course, EPEAT Gold, Arsenic-free glass, fully recyclable.
One commercial for Macbook pro – Shows the commercial
“Introducing the 13-inch MacBook Pro, with a stunning Retina Display. For the pro in all of us.” – Catchy tagline i must say
Phil is back up, and the older MacBook Pros stay around, starting at $1,199.
The higher-spec 13-inch model starts at $1,999. We’re guessing that’s a 2.9GHz Core i7, but we’ll wait and see about that.
Next he moves on something mini to talk about – Mac mini
The Mac mini is our smallest, most affordable Mac.”
Four USB 3.0 ports, SD card reader, HDMI… and now we’re looking inside. Core i5 or i7 ivy Bridge chips, up to 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB HDD or 256GB of SSD.
2.5GHz spec with 4GB of RAM and 500GB HDD for $599.
There’s a server model, 2.3GHz Core i7 with 4GB of RAM and dual 1TB HDDs for $999.
Starts shipping today as well
Consumes 11 watts at idle, which Apple says is the most efficient ever.
Next he talks about iMac
“It is a great design, evolved over many years, and many think of it as the flagship of the product line.”
We see a blue color iMac
Phil says Apple has “relentlessly” kept updating it, 7 generations now “each one better than the last.”
That’s why it’s so great today for you to be the first to see the next generation if iMac.”
Wow its super thin and super sexy ! Some one give me this please.
No optical drive, looks to be well under an inch thin
It’s stunning from every side. Edge-to-edge glass.
Edges are damn thin
There’s an entire computer in here” says Phil. There isn’t, however, an optical drive that we can see.
It’s 5mm thin at the edges.
Apple is using friction stir welding to join the “chin” on the bottom to the back of the device, effectively molecularly bonding them together.
It basically looks identical to the previous version, just hugely more thin at the edges
The display itself is 5mm thinner and it had a 2mm air gap between the glass and the panel. Now they’re laminated together. This reduces reflectivity and makes things much thinner
21.5-inch and 27-inch. 2,560 x 1,440 and 1,920 x 1,080 for the two sizes.
IPS for 178 degree viewing angle
Over 300 nits brighness
75 percent less reflection due to that laminated display and a new anti-glare coating
Each display is said to be individually calibrated on the manufacturing line, so they should be good to go out of the box.
720p FaceTime HD camera, dual mics, dual speakers. It’s eight pounds lighter than before for the 27 incher
Specs insider are Core i5 or i7 processors, NVIDIA Kepler graphics, up to 768GB of flash or 3TB HDD, and 32GB of RAM.
So much work has gone into fitting all that into a computer this thin.”
Four USB 3.0 ports, three Thunderbolt ports. Bluetooth 4.0 802.11n WiFi
You can now choose what Apple is calling a Fusion Drive. 128GB of flash storage mixed with 1 or 3GB HDD. It fused into a single volume and works automatically
It’s a single, logical volume that delivers faster reads and writes as well as massive storage.
Mountain Lion fits on the flash in its entirety, as well as all the pre-installed software. Apps will generally be installed in flash, documents to the HDD.
Mountain Lion will figure out what you use the most and shuffle things around appropriately
All transparently to you. You just use it and it works.”
Aperture imports are 3.5x faster using flash vs. HDD. In this FusionDrive it’s very nearly as fast as a pure SSD system. So the price between the two is what you need to thnik about !
For those who are still stuck in the past we do offer an external optical drive.”
Base, 21.5-inch model is $1,299 with a 2.7GHz i5 with 1TB HDD and 8GB of RAM.
These ship next month, coming in November.
The 27-inch model starts with a 2.9GHz i5, 8GB of RAM and 1TB HDD for $1,799, shipping in December.
Phil is done and Tim is back up on the stage.
“These products are really cool,” says Tim.
Next up is iPad.Apple sold their 100 millionth iPad two weeks ago. Again, big applause!
That’s 100 million in just two and a half years. That’s unprecedented for a new product in a new category.”
We sold more iPads in the June quarter than any PC maker sold of their entire lineup
It seems like every day there’s another tablet shipping, but when you look at the ones that are actually being used, the numbers tell a different story
91% of web traffic in tablet is by iPad rest 9% is by others
“They love that they can connect anywhere they go, using either WiFi or cellular… they love iPad’s legendary, all-day battery life…”
People are lovers, basically. We love you, we love you all.
Speaks more how iPad is helping everyone in day to day lives.
iBooks Textbooks are now available for 80% of the US core curriculum… 2,500 schools in the US have classrooms that use iBooks textbooks.
Today, we’re announcing the latest version of iBooks Author and it includes some incredible templates.”
New templates, new fonts, and you can use your own fonts too.
Mathematical expressions can be inserted directly too — no more having to render them externally.
Multitouch widgets, too, and publishers can push updates more easily than before.
It’s still free, as ever, and it’s in the Mac App Store today.
iPad is taking the business market by storm. In the office, in the field, and in places you could never dream of seeing a PC, iPad is showing up more and more and doing more and more things.”
“Almost every company in the Fortune 500 is now testing or deploying iPad, and we’re seeing a similar success in smaller business.”
“With 100 million sold in just two and a half years, we couldn’t be more thrilled with how quickly iPad has been embraced by so many users for so many different things.”
He’s talking up the new iPad, with its Retina display.
“We’ve got some really cool stuff to show you, and to do that I’d like to welcome Phil back up on the stage.”
Phil’s getting to show off all the cool stuff today!
“Just half a year ago we introduced the iPad with Retina display and it’s incredible, and it’s even more incredible that we’re here today to talk about the fourth generation iPad.”
This fourth generation iPad, it is a powerhouse.”
It’s a whole new machine with an A6X processor. “We are so far ahead of the competition I can’t even see them in the rear-view mirror.”
Doubles the CPU and graphics performance, should bring us up to iPhone 5 levels.
Also has the new image signal processor in the iPhone 5, still offering 10 hours of battery life.
FaceTime camera is now 720p.
The LTE machine has “greatly expanded coverage” — adding Sprint in the US and KDDI in Japan.
802.11a/b/g/n dual-band WiFi, and there’s a Lightning connector, of course
Finally, here’s the new camera connectors, for SD reading, as well as USB, HDMI and VGA adapters.
And there’s the new Retina display, of course.
Black and white versions, 16GB WiFi at $499 as before.
“Twice the performance, new features at the same price.”
16GB Cellular model starts at $629, as before.
So what else can we do to help customers find even more users for iPad, to use them in places they’ve never imagined?”
It’s the new smaller iPad! Big, big round of applause now.
It really looks a lot like the new iPod touch — bigger, of course.
“I think I can tell by your excitement you know what this is. This is iPad mini.”
“What can you do with an iPad mini that you can’t already do with the amazing fourth generation iPad?”
Well this: you can hold this in one hand.”
It has the same curving back as the iPod touch. “There is nothing as amazing as this. It is incredibly thin and beautiful… beautiful from every angle.”
Phil is indeed holding it comfortably in one hand.
It’s 7.2mm thick, 1/4 thicker than the fourth-gen iPad. That’s as thin as a pencil.
.68 pounds, half as light as a fouth-gen iPad. As light as a legal notepad.
Black and white, the black model having the same anodization as the iPhone 5
The team worked really hard thinking” about what size display to use.
They didn’t want developers to do any work but they wanted it thinner — but not so small that it isn’t useable.
iPad 2 is 9.7 inches, iPad mini is 7.9. Exact same resolution as the iPad 2. 1,024 x 768. So, no work for developers at all!
So iPad 2 may soon be ditched out
“It’s great for reading your email or surfing on the web… it’s great for viewing your photos and sharing them with your family…”
“It’s fantastic for all the iLife applications… it is so much fun to sit there and play multitouch software instruments on this thin and light iPad.”
Basically, Phil’s theme seems to be that it runs apps, and it does a pretty good job of it
Others have tried to make tablets smaller than the iPad and they’ve failed miserably. These are not great experiences.”
We’re looking at iPad mini vs. the Nexus 7 — though Phil isn’t saying it’s the Nexus 7.
The iPad mini has a thinner bezel and metal design, but is thinner and lighter than the Nexus, they say.
The .9 inch increase on the diagonal gives 35% more display area, says Phil. “That’s a huge difference, and it doesn’t stop there.”
You can see a huge difference” when surfing the web, says Phil, 49% more content since there are no on-screen controls.
Basically, you have a lot more space at your disposal, without having to step up to the 10-incher.
You get a tablet experience on the iPad mini, you get a scaled-up phone experience on the other.”
So if you are ok with the smaller iPad mini then cool else you would need to buy the 10 incher
Again, we’re seeing a lot of examples of how iPad apps are much better optimized for tablets than Android tablet apps.
It is a great iPad. In fact, the technologies inside are equal to or better than the iPad 2 in every way.”
Dual-core A5 processor, FaceTime HD camera and 5 megapixel iSight camera on the back with 1080p recording.
LTE wireless and the new dual-band 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi and, of course, a Lightning connector.
“Of all this technology, all this incredible capability in a thin and light device, but the team has worked really hard to give you incredible battery life.” Still 10 hours!
“It is every inch an iPad.”
Next is some Video
Jony Ive is walking us through the process of creating the new iPad.
“Our goal was to create a product that can do all the things of the full-size iPad, but pack them in a product that is so much smaller. And that’s the new iPad mini.”
As the video plays we’re thinking more about the fourth-gen iPad. How are you third-gen owners feeling? That’s a very short lifespan, to say the least. So be happy you were the proud first owners of the new iPad
Jony is talking about wanting to make this more than just a smaller version. It’s “a concentration of, not a reduction of, the original.”
“We have continued to develop our unibody process.” There are two major components, the body and the glass. There’s a diamond cut chamfer around the edge, ala the iPhone 5 and the new touch.”
There’s a new SmartCover, no more metal hinge this time.
Mixed reactions on Twitter about the 3rd gen iPad being retired so quickly. Some angry, some not so much. Folks already dubbing it the iPad 3S. Lol.
Headphone connector is on the top of the iPad, by the way, not the bottom as on the iPhone 5 or iPod touch.
Video is over, Phil is back. “Every inch an iPad.”
Five colors available for SmartCovers, plus a Product RED model.
16GB is the smallest configuration with WiFi, priced at $329. Awesome pricing I must say
iPad 2 stays around, starting at $399.
32GB mini is $429, 64GB for $519. $130 each additional for LTE connectivity.
iPad mini and 4th gen iPad are up for pre order on the 26th. WiFi versions ship on November 2nd.
Cellular versions shipping two weeks later.
A long list of countries for the launch, too many to list! I hope India is there
“This is an amazing new addition to our iPad family, and we’re going to be so excited to tell customers about it who don’t already know about it.”
Time to look at the TV commercial. We’re playing Chopsticks in Garage Band. Where’s Tom Hanks?
Very simple, no speech, just piano.
Big applause for that. People love virtual pianos played by fingers!
And that’s iPad mini, let me turn it back to Tim.”
Seems like we’re almost done here, Tim is back up on stage.
“It’s very cool.”
We told you earlier this year that you would see some incredible innovation across the year, innovation that only Apple can deliver.”
“We think we’ve kept our promise, and I hope that you agree.”
“We shipped Mountain Lion and iOS 6… with hundreds of new features that help Macs and iOS devices to work seamlessly together.”
“We launched two amazing new iPods.”
“We launched the unbelievable new iPhone, with an incredibly thin and light design with a beautiful four-inch display.”
“We refreshed our entire line of notebooks.”
And we announced today the unbelievably thin and unbelievably gorgeous new iMac.”
“Earlier this year we announced the third generation iPad and today we replaced it with a fourth generation iPad, and added the iPad mini to the family.”
“Yes, it has been an incredible year, this has been a truly prolific year for innovation for Apple.”
“We hope that you love these products as much as we loved creating them. “
“I’d personally like to thank all of the teams at Apple… they’ve dedicated a huge part of their lives to making the best products on earth.”
Healthy, warm, and well-deserved applause there. Kudos, Apple folks!
These are the most talented and innovative people I know, and it is a privilege and an inspiration for me to be able to work with them.”
Okay, we’re done here, Tim is inviting to get their hands on
Thats all from me now.Blog posts coming ahead.
