I had previously posted about Motorola and Verizon announcing the next generation of Droid and finally they have revealed it it’s Droid X. There were some speculation on which one would be released either Droid X or Droid2 but in the end its Droid X.Droid X would ship on July 15th unlike the previously mentioned July 19th for $199 and sadly it wouldn’t come with Froyo and Flash for the time being and it’ll be updated to Froyo in late summer. It all started when John Stratton just pulled the Droid X out of his pocket to reveal Droid X in the Verizon- Motorola event.Eric Schmidt was there as a surprise guest. Here is what he quotes
Why is everyone so interested in mobile? It’s a new way of computing… you have a personal supercomputer that knows everything about you. Behind it you have massive parallel supercomputers doing processing. You need an incredibly fast and stable network. You need an large screen and a fast processor. You need a software platform that scales — a platform with real APIs. This is not a toy — this is not just an app engine. It’s not one product — although we’re announcing an incredibly powerful one. It’s not just the network, or the apps. It’s the sum of it all. People are thinking mobile first.
The main chief executives gathered were John Stratton, Sanjay Jha, Andy Rubin, and Shantanu Narayen. Here is what they quoted.

Andy Rubin quotes
Everybody came together to create this hit product.Selling 160,000 Android devices a day, with 65,000 apps in the Market. new types of services… we’re developing new ways to harness services in the cloudsIf you’re a third party developer who’s built an app for Android, you can talk to it from the cloud.
Shantanu Narayen quotes
The reality is that people want unfettered access to the content that they want, wherever they are .Where Adobe comes in is really about enabling all that content on the web to play on the devices… Flash continues to be the world’s most pervasive software. We had to do a bit of innovation, we completely re-wrote Flash Player 10.1 to take advantage of all of this hardware.
Sanjay Jha quotes
When you have a device like this, it screams video, and we’ve done some work on that front.” Announcing a partnership with Blockbuster to rent and buy movies on the Droid X.The device will run 2.1 at launch with Motoblur, but it’s been “hidden” from the consumer at startup and setup.battery life will be the same as the original Droid, even with the bigger display. There’s also a bigger battery coming later — it’ll add a millimeter of thickness. The Droid X is only for Verizon in the US.The Droid X will be available in other outlets on July 15th, not just Verizon outlets.
That’s done with the quotes, let me tell you about the specs and some pics. It’s built of basically the same material as the Droid, but there’s something almost kind of “taut” about the phone, where when you thwack it with a finger it resounds like a drum. There are three mics, and in video mode you can select between “scenes” based on which mic you want to use: outward facing for regular shoots, inward facing for narration. The third mic is up top for noise cancellation during calls. It also has a multitouch keyboard…we’ve also preloaded Swype, which is a big change in the way keyboards work. You get your choice between Swype and Motorola’s multitouch keyboard, which is really pretty great. Droid X has integrated mobile hotspot with support for up to 5 devices connected over WiFi, DLNA support.Smartphone data plan will be $29.99 for unlimited, with $20 for WiFi tethering that comes with an extra 2GB of data.

The 4.3-inch 854 x 480 handset features Android 2.1 with an all-new UI skin, a TI OMAP3630 processor galloping along at 1GHz, HDMI out, 8 megapixel camera with dual LED flash and 720p video capture, and 8GB of onboard storage with expansion of up to 32GB (you get a 16GB card in the box) all stuffed in a package 9.9mm thick. You can tell that the processor is fast, but the UI still has a jerky quality to it — it’s not totally fluid.
It doesn’t launch with Froyo, but that’ll come later in the Summer as an upgrade along with Flash 10.1 support; the phone will be available on July 15 for $199.99 on contract after rebate, while the mobile hotspot service will run $20 extra a month with a 2GB cap and 5 cent per MB overage (data consumed on the phone itself is unlimited). Mirroring AT&T’s move with the iPhone 4, all Verizon customers with upgrade dates in 2010 will be pulled up so they’re eligible for the Droid X as soon as it’s available.Support for Exchange and Gmail enterprise, push email, corporate directory, and remote management / wipe. The new version of Motoblur is much, much more attractive than before — the widgets are sleeker, smaller, and less in your face. You can also resize them, and they rearrange themselves somewhat intelligently.
So to sum up the Droid X specs here it is
- Android 2.1 smartphone with new UI and with Motoblur
- 4.3-inch 854 x 480 handset
- TI OMAP3630 processor galloping along at 1GHz

“Nine months ago, we made a commitment to our customers to bring the openness of Android to the Verizon Wireless network,” said John Stratton, executive vice president and chief marketing officer for Verizon Wireless. “Since then, we have introduced the top-selling Android phone in the marketplace today – the DROID by Motorola. DROID X takes that commitment to another level with exclusive content, faster processing speeds, and, of course, the reliability of our network.”
Sanjay Jha, co-chief executive officer of Motorola and chief executive officer of Motorola Mobile Devices and Home business added, “Motorola designed DROID X to push the extreme limits of Android innovation, and enable you to do even more with your mobile device. We are breaking down barriers so that you can experience the Web the way it was meant to be and create, share and view content like never before, either in your hand or in your home. Enterprise users will also find DROID X appealing with features including push e-mail and live widgets for e-mail and calendar updates.”
Customers can add the optional 3G Mobile Hotspot service to their DROID X for $20 per month. The 3G Mobile Hotspot allows customers to turn the phone into a wireless modem for up to five compatible Wi-Fi devices. In addition, current Verizon Wireless customers who have contracts ending by December 31, 2010, can upgrade to any smartphone, including DROID X, without penalty.
DROID X gives customers a 4.3-inch high-resolution screen for viewing the latest movies and video from BLOCKBUSTER On Demand® presented by V CAST Video, the newest addition to the Verizon Wireless V CAST application, which also includes access to favorite TV shows. The DROID X video capabilities let customers capture spontaneous fun, combining a dual-flash, 8-megapixel camera, HD camcorder, as well as DLNA and HDMI connectivity to download, stream and share personal HD content.
DROID X customers will also receive Android 2.2 and Adobe Flash Player 10.1 with an over-the-air update in the latter half of the summer. With the update, the Flash Player will allow mobile users to experience hundreds of sites with rich applications and content inside the browser, including games, animations, rich Internet applications (RIAs), data presentations and visualizations, ecommerce, music, video, audio and more.
“It has been an exciting time for Android momentum and global consumer adoption since the announcement of DROID by Motorola nine months ago,” said Andy Rubin, vice president of engineering for Google. “There are 160,000 new Android-powered devices activated daily and Android Market has grown to over 65,000 applications. Plus later this summer, Verizon Wireless and Motorola will update all the DROID by Motorola phones to the latest 2.2 software. For customers, this means great new features and improved browser performance. For developers, this will provide new tools such as cloud-to-device messaging and enhanced enterprise functionality.”
“We are excited about full Flash support coming to the DROID X and other devices from Motorola,” said Shantanu Narayen, president and chief executive officer of Adobe. “Flash Player 10.1, which is one of Adobe’s most anticipated releases ever, has been redesigned from the ground up to deliver the kind of highly engaging experiences that consumers now expect from their mobile devices.”
