Mozilla to release Firefox 3.5 today.

After a series of RC1 which was released in mid June and the consequent RC2 was made available by June 22nd and the final RC3 version was released on June 25th,now Mozilla team is mobilizing to ship Firefox 3.5 today as said by a spokesperson via email.Firefox 3.5 will include a private browsing mode that hides browser activity, a speed-up JavaScript engine known as TraceMonkey, new location services, and support for several emerging HTML 5 features.

HTML 5 support will allow the browser to natively play video encoded in the open source Ogg Theora format and Ogg Vorbis audio, which provides for manipulation and editing of video without the use of an external program.

Firefox 3.0 made its debut in June 2008, and heavy demand for the updated browser prompted Mozilla to delay its release for several hours. When it finally went live, the company reported an estimated 14,000 downloads per minute, and a total of 8 million downloads in 24 hours.Mike Beltzner, Mozilla’s director of Firefox, expects over one billion downloads of Firefox 3.5.You can read the release notes here.Download Mozilla Firefox 3.5 for Windows, Mac OSx and Linux.

Download Mozilla Firefox RC V.3

Mozilla Firefox has now moved to a new RC 3 version ie Firefox RC v.3 aka (RC3) thats what it shows on the Firefox site .I was confused whether its the RC2 or a typo in the RC2. Firefox 3.5 (Release Candidate) is based on the Gecko 1.9.1 rendering platform, which has been under development for the past year.

Firefox 3.5 offers many changes over the previous version, supporting new web technologies, improving performance and ease of use, and adding new features for users. For a list of features refer my previous post. You can check the Release notes and the download link here.I am not sure on the memory management in the new version as i don’t find any change wit my 4 gigs of Ram.

Windows 7 Pricing revealed- Cheaper than Vista

Finally Microsoft today announced the prices for the new upcoming OS Windows 7.There had been many rumours about the pricing and today its been out officially.Microsoft has reduced the price on its most popular Windows the Home Premium upgrade version, by approximately 10 percent. In the US, this would mean a drop from $130 to $120, a savings of $10. For the Home Premium full version, the price drops from $240 to $200.Rest everything is unchanged. You can take a look at the below sheet for the pricing info.

As  you can by comparing the Windows Vista retail pricing at launch to the Windows 7 retail pricing at launch, the differences are noticable. The Home Premium upgrade version price has been dropped by $40 and the Ultimate upgrade version has been dropped by $40. The Home Premium full version has been dropped $40 along with the Ultimate full version also dropped  by $80.

Upgrading from XP or Vista with a retail copy:

Windows XP users need to know that regardless of which edition they currently have installed (Windows XP Home, Windows XP Professional, or Windows XP Media Center Edition) and regardless of which edition of Windows 7 they are moving to (Home Premium, Professional , or Ultimate), they will need to perform a clean install, whether they buy the upgrade or full version.Using Windows Easy Transfer, users can copy their important files and settings to an external USB stick, external hard drive, or DVD, and then move the data back after the installation. The installer will verify that XP is genuine and Windows 7 will have to be installed on the same partition as the XP installation.

Windows Vista users can follow multiple upgrade paths to Windows 7. As was the case when upgrading from XP to Vista, you will only need to perform a clean install if you are going to a version that is lower on the food chain. For example, if you are going from Windows Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 Home Premium, you would do a clean install. If you are going from Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Ultimate, you do not need to do a clean install. When you switch to a higher version, you’re adding on the existing functionality, but when you’re going to a lesser version, you’re taking away functionality, thus the need for a clean install.

Once you have some edition of Windows 7 on your system, whether you purchased it via an OEM or just upgraded from Windows XP or Windows Vista, you will be able to upgrade to a “more premium” version of Windows 7 by purchasing an upgrade key to unlock additional features, just as with Vista. This is called Windows Anytime Upgrade (WAU). For example, you could start off with Windows Vista Home Premium, upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium, and then later choose to upgrade to Windows 7 Professional.

Windows 7 E: no upgrades for the EU

As you might know that for the European Union countries Windows 7 wont be coming with a browser. So to add bad news to it they are not offering upgrade versions at al for EU.Windows 7 E editions will be sold only in full versions: there will be no upgrade versions available in the European Union. This move was initiated in response to the EU’s antitrust investigation of its browser with Windows.

The EU price: Home Premium upgrade (€119.99), Professional upgrade (€285.00), Ultimate upgrade (€299.00), Home Premium full (€199.99), Professional full (€309.00), and Ultimate full (€319.00)

Microsoft Security Essentials aka Morro released

Few days back i had blogged about Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) aka Morro.Yesterday Microsoft made it available to public. Now any one can download the Microsoft Security Essentials 1.0 Beta via the Microsoft’s page for MSE, a link  also to Microsoft Connect is provided from which users can choose to fill a short survey on some questions including Seven and some security based questions.

Once done you can download MSE for Windows  Seven and Vista for both X86 and X64 versions along with XP too.Its just a 4.7 MB file and its light on resources and no conflict as such with Windows Defender and Firewall.Haven’t tested with Nod32 4.0 yet but will keep updated.

A malware researcher just posted a video on You tube of MSE 1.0 Beta.Due to too much server traffic you might get a error on the Microsoft link as well as Connect then here is a alternate link via Softpedia.MSE  is specifically designed for individual consumer PC use using the smallest resource footprint possible to provide complete anti-malware protection and will include a new protection technology, as part of the Microsoft anti-malware engine, called Dynamic Signature Service (DSS).

System Requirements:

  • For Windows XP, a PC with a CPU with clock speed of at least 500MHz and at least 256MB of RAM.
  • For Windows Vista and Windows 7, a PC with a CPU with clock speed of at least 1.0GHz and at least 1GB of RAM.
  • VGA (display): 800×600 or higher.
  • Storage: 140MB of available hard-disk space.
  • An Internet connection for installation and to download the latest virus and spyware definitions.
  • IE 6 and Firefox 2.0 above versions.

This Beta build (1.0.1407.00) is lower than that of the leaked build via torrents (1.0.2140.0), so users of the leak could be advised to keep their current version and those who don’t have it yet, i recommend to download from the official sites and not via torrents.A small FAQ can be found at WindowsClub.

Additional support can be found at MSE site. Its available for only first 75,000 users but Microsoft can increase the limit if required. So why wait, go and get it before its gone.I will keep you guys updated with compatibility issues.

Download MSE 1.0 Beta via Microsoft site or Softpedia.
